About

With wonder in my eyes

a thousand questions in my heart

and a spring in my step

I set off to explore this megacity….

If you’ve read my post Onion City, you would know how much I hated Delhi once upon a time…Lucky for me a friend dragged me to the Bijai Mandal and Begumpur Masjid in south Delhi one Sunday, and literally opened my eyes. I was so awestruck by the ruins around me, and even more by the stories I read in a slew of books that followed, that I was a complete convert. Soon cushy corporate job and all the associated hang-ups were forgotten…and I began a fresh episode wandering the streets of Delhi and learning its stories galore. And when I saw what a wealth of experiences lies just around the corner of the malls and markets, I decided to write this blog. It is a tiny attempt to share the stories and hidden gems of this amazing city with fellow denizens and travelers.

Update: Nearly a year has gone by since I started this blog, and though I have not been as regular as I intended to be, you my dear readers have made this a very rewarding experience. ย Thank you! As I currently traverse the exciting path of entrepreneurshipย along with a couple of old friends from B-school, travelling and Delhi-watching continue to give me solace.

  1. Wow! I want to know more about you now!

    1. wanderfool says:

Ahh, thanks for the kind words, Ken ๐Ÿ™‚ But to be honest, once I went through your blog and read what you’ve been up to, I was humbled. It’s a real inspiration to read your stories.

      1. That’s very kind of you, but honestly not warranted ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m pretty ordinary though the place I live in – Bangladesh – is probably as amazing as Delhi. But you sound quite incredible – you’ve given up a lot by the sounds of things ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Hi, just wanted to tell you how much i enjoy your blog…which I found because you visited mine. I am even more inspired now to get out and explore more of the city (I too have fallen into a rut of just going to/from work, and have hesitated to get out on foot and do much on my own…but feel more inspired after my visit to your blog).

    1. wanderfool says:

Wow, thank you Jevene! I feel so excited to have more and more people join this happy bandwagon of discovery ๐Ÿ™‚ Do keep us posted about any new sites and stories!

Dear Marissa, thanks so much for your nomination, you’ve no idea how much it means to me ๐Ÿ™‚ Being a relatively new blogger I am still exploring other blogs…so I think I will take a while longer to draw up my own list of nominations, but it will be there for sure!
And while I am at it, let me also point out my readers to your excellent blog on all things medieval- I really love reading all the stories and opinions on it. Thank you ๐Ÿ™‚

  9. Having just had 5 very short visits to Delhi, I have never really appreciated its small niceties. Thanks for taking me through the capital city, exactly the way that a city ought to be discovered!! Great blog!! ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. wanderfool says:

Thank you so much Sumithra! I agree with you…wish I had discovered every city I have been to in the same way. Welcome to DateWithDelhi…and hope this urges you to make that long visit now and explore all the hidden niceties here ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. I hope I can make that trip in the very near future too!!
        Cheers,
        Sumithra.

I can somehow relate to you. I have a Corporate job too. But I spend my weekends searching for ruins, markets and hidden teasures in and around Baroda.

    1. wanderfool says:

Great to meet you NS ๐Ÿ™‚ I have never been to Baroda, tell us more about the place! I imagine your weekends must be loads of fun.

  11. Bhanupriya says:

Hi! Coming here was absolute serendipity and you have evoked great emotions in me since morning. I am a Dilliwalla who lives in London for the last 4 years. Like you said when I moved to Delhi in 1997 for my studies, I absolutely hated it..the snobbery, the loudness, the crassness, recklessness and the don’t-you-know-who-I-am culture. And then, I came face to face with the poetry of Delhi i.e the monuments, the living culture, Chandni Chowk,Mehrauli, Nizamuddin, safdarjung,Lodi gardens and I fell in love. As someone once said..yeh shahr nahin Mehfil hai! Will keep coming back for more. Would love to meet you and explore delhi, just as i used to when I am there…Btw, I used to conduct heritage walks in mehrauli and Chandni Chowk…Love your blog..and the photos.

    1. wanderfool says:

Bhanupriya- your words totally made my day ๐Ÿ™‚ There are days I wonder what I am doing this for…after all, it’s a very niche audience out here. And then there are days when someone like you sends genuine words of appreciation my way and I know it’s worth all the effort. Would love to explore Delhi with you when you are around, just give me a buzz please!

    2. wanderfool says:

Oh, and by the way- I spent a few months in London on work, and must say you are lucky to have been transported from one wonderful city to another! Hope you are enjoying exploring the treasures of that great city.

      1. bhanupriyarao says:

Hey! Pls never give up on this site….I have always felt sad for the Dilliwalas( and they constitute a majority), who think fun is going to a mall, when they live among such beauties. There is history in every corner of the city and sadly people bump against it, shrug their shoulders and drive to the nearest mall. Dilliwalas ought to know more.
Yes, Im a travel freak and a constant explorer, so I’m nosing around quite a bit here. I am planning to write a blog myself on all my travels and will send yo the link. Keep up the good work. Btw, Can i Ask what camera do you use for the photos? Also do you do any editing on them, coz they’re amazing.

        1. wanderfool says:

About the camera- thanks a ton. Actually I am no photographer- don’t even know much technical gyaan about photography, just enjoy dabbling with pictures. I have a decent point and shoot which is good enough for me. Some pics have been taken from my android phone, too. I edit the pics using Instagram or Befunky. Love these apps!

  12. bhanupriyarao says:

And also, I can point you towards certain gems, especially in Chandni Chowk…mostly living culture that I’m sure will amuse you..like the chap who makes Rotis the size of a table cloth and sells it by pieces, the odd couple of chaps who sell Malai makhan a yummy frothy outcome of whipping the ass out of Makhan, for which you will have to go to CC early on a Sat/Sun morning. Or the shop that buys old saris takes the zari out of them and sells it by weight….Let me know if you’re keen about writing about these things!

    1. wanderfool says:

Yesss pleeease! Tell me about all of that…sounds too good to be true ๐Ÿ™‚ I am astonished you know so many quirly things and remember so much!

      1. wanderfool says:

        “quirky” I meant

  13. bhanupriyarao says:

  31. Hello Varsha;
We are here on our second day in Delhi – celebrating our third sons 5th birthday. To be truthful we were a bit daunted by the idea of Delhi but the reality is calmer and much more fascinating than we imagined. A blog like yours also helps our curiosity about the place. Thanks for all your efforts to educate us on the wonders of this ancient city.

  32. I, Ramesh Bidhuri, was first elected as MLA of tughlakabad in 2003. I am very thankful to the people of tughlakabad, South Delhi for choosing me as their MLA since last three continuous assembly election.
For this reason BJP nominated me for the seat of MP in 2014 from South Delhi. I want to say thanks to my Sr. Leaders and BJP for showing faith and for nominating me as MP candidate…
