      Thank you Debopam!

  3. What hidden gems of Delhi would you suggest visiting in a 3-day trip? Do let me know! I might be visiting, and would love to see Delhi from the eyes of a local – something different from the usual tourist spots. ,Thanks in advance! 🙂

Hey, that’s great! To see a different side of Delhi, try the Hauz Khas ruins and lake at sunset, and the boutique cafes and restaurants nearby. Drive to India Gate after dinner. Try Chandni Chowk & Jama Masjid to see an old world Delhi and sample some Mughal cuisine (at Karim’s or Al Jawahar near Jama Masjid). If you are a morning type of person, a walk in Mehrauli Archaeological Park would be wonderful- there are numerous Delhi walking groups and you could join one of them for some wisdom about the place! If you’d like an evening walk, Lodi Gardens is the place to be, also because Khan Market next door is a great place for shopping/ eating out. If you’ve never had a dargah experience before, you could visit Nizamuddin, but be prepared to be a bit overwhelmed by the crowds and some touts. If you wanna see some exhibitions/ plays, try out India Habitat Center. And then there’s Dilli Haat for all the ethnic shopping.
Pheww, you see I can’t stop! If you’d tell me what kind of things you like maybe I can give a better answer than this garble!

      1. The dargah experience sounds great, as does the local shopping and eating out. Ditto with the gardens. These are the things I like, plus typical local architecture observing, historical monuments (other than the typical touristy stuff) and books.

      2. In other words, I am looking for typical local experiences – in terms of shopping, sightseeing, spending time, eating, everything. I want to do things that the locals do in Delhi, see the place the way they do.

Hmmm, good to know. Then you must get on the metro once , must try shopping in Sarojini Nagar or Lajpat Nagar, and eat all the street food in Chandni Chowk area. Since this is Ramzaan time it will be crowded but you will really get to see the old city in all its glory, not to mention the kebabs and numerous other delicacies on offer. Try and go near iftaar time to see people breaking their fast inside the Jama Masjid- I saw it once and it was amazing (pics coming up soon in another post).
As for lesser known monuments- there is no dearth of them in Delhi! Some of my favorites (other than the ones I have already mentioned) would be the Khirki Masjid (opposite the Saket malls), the Madhi Masjid near Mehrauli, Safdarjung’s Tomb (can combine that with a tour of Lodi Gardens, Dilli Haat, Khan Market). The baolis in Mehrauli and also the Agrasen ki Baoli near CP are quite fantastic.
Have an amazing time! And tell us all about it 🙂

          1. Thank you so much! 🙂

So true Shilpi. Normally we are too busy cursing the traffic and honking away to glory to notice the beauty of the world 😦
